We’ve also developed higher level courses for people who currently work in the Hair & Beauty Industry. For hairdressers, our excellent and very successful NVQ 3 course provides the opportunity to advance their skills. Our courses include levels 1, 2 or 3 in NVQ Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing. You can specialise in a number of areas such as nail extensions or massage. Alternatively, we offer holistic therapies at level 3, with part-time options in massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and Indian head massage.

After completing their course, many students go on to work in large salons, health spas, on cruise liners and abroad.

HAIR Do At College

Classic, Current and Emerging were the themes of a glitzy end of year hair show at a Birmingham College which was judged by celebrity hairdresser Royston Blythe.

Enthusiastic friends and family of participating students flocked to South Birmingham College in Hall Green to see the contest put on by the Level 3 Hairdressing students, who had to organise the event as part of their qualification.

After much deliberation the judges including Royston Blythe – celebrity hairdresser to none other than Katie Price - announced the winning student as 37 year old Shagufta Zabir from Moseley. She had created a range of looks on her models to show styles through the decades to reflect the theme of the show. Drawing inspiration from magazines and hairdressing shows her winning creations included a ‘classic’ Beehive, the ‘current’ trend for asymmetrical cuts and the ‘emerging’ renaissance for crimping.

Commenting on her win Shagufta said: “I was absolutely overwhelmed when they announced me as the winner, as the standard amongst all the students was so high.

“This has really given me the incentive I needed to continue my career in hairdressing, and I hope to apply some of the new skills I’ve learnt when I start my new job at Opulence Hairdressing in Sparkbrook later this year.”

Runner-up was 38-year old Anne Shimmon from Hall Green who, despite a leg injury managed to prepare for the competition whilst on crutches!

Generous prize donations from those involved in the hairdressing industry included training courses worth £700, state-of-the-art electrical equipment, and entertainment was provided by musicians from the College.

Tutor Alex Davis said she was very proud of all the students’ efforts. “The show went really well and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. The students went to great lengths to make the event a success. They used students, friends and family as models, picked all the clothes themselves and sorted out the publicity.

“It was also such a thrill for staff and students to have Royston Blythe as part of the judging panel, and we’d like to thank him for his support.”
