The Hall Green campus is undergoing a major renovation and the new gym was originally scheduled to reopen in a year’s time, but staff at the College listened to students who missed the facility and pulled out all the stops to bring it forward.

Jacqui Quailey, student enrichment officer for South Birmingham College, said: “The students wanted a new gym as soon as possible.

“With rising levels of obesity in young people, it’s important for education providers to provide information and equipment to help students adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“We have had some very positive feedback about it.”

Equipment at the gym includes advanced equipment like Dual Combo machines and Smith machines, as well as standard equipment like free weights and cardiovascular machines. Staff will also use the gym to promote exercise and provide healthy living tips on areas like diet and lifestyle.

Principal Mike Hopkins said: “The opening of this gym shows we are dedicated to improving every aspect of our learners’ lives, as well as the fact that we listen and act when they come to us with proposals or concerns.”
