Level 2 Apprenticeship in Accounting (201)
Who is this apprenticeship programme suitable for?
At this level you'll start to develop your skills in double entry bookkeeping and gain a grasp of management and administrative processes. You'll learn basic costing principles, how to use manual and computerised accounting systems and how to work with purchase, sales, and general ledgers.
What is involved in this apprenticeship training programme?
The training programme comprises:

1. QCF Level 2 in Accounting (AAT 100/2940/0). The NVQ part of the programme involves 15-20 hours 'on the job' training and assessment of the employee, in the workplace, by a NVQ Assessor. The employee will be required to collate a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their occupational competence, through the application of knowledge and skills within the workplace. 2. Level 2 Technical Certificate in Accounting (AAT QCF 500/8377/6). The technical certificate part of the programme will involve the employee attending college for 120 hours (or 20 days), to learn the underpinning knowledge necessary to demonstrate occupational competence. This part of the training can take place on employers' premises, if 10 or more employees are undertaking the same training.

3. Key Skills (C&G). Key Skills are the practical skills in English Level 2, maths Level 2 that allow people to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. The employee will be required to attend college for 72 hours (or 12 days) to undertake 2 Key Skills, prepare portfolios of evidence and sit online tests at the end of the training.

4. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR). This small part of the programme is integrated into the NVQ and is designed to help employees understand their employment rights and responsibilities and rights related to equal opportunities, health and safety and to understand the safe learner concept.

What is the time commitment for this apprenticeship training programme?
This apprenticeship programme normally takes an employee 12 to 18 months to complete, dependent on their prior experience, competency levels and general attitude and approach towards staff training and development.
How much will the apprenticeship training programme cost?
The Government fully funds apprenticeship training for employees aged between 16-18. For employees aged 19 and over the Government still substantially funds the training, but does require the employer to make a small contribution of £252 inclusive per employee. Trainees must be employed and paid the minimum apprentice wage of £95 per week.
NVQ Units
Employees must undertake the modules below. These are mandatory: This level teaches skills relevant to finance officer roles, and is approximately equivalent to GCSE grades A-C.

Preparing and recording financial documentation

Maintaining and reconciling the cash book
- Maintaining petty cash records
- Processing business transactions and extracting a trial balance
- Maintaining the journal and control accounts
- Providing basic cost and revenue information
- Computerised accounting

Working effectively in accounting and finance, covering communication skills, understanding of role and function, managing self and team working.
